From jungle to desert

We will meet you at Salta City´s airport. We will go driving from the airport to La Caldera, located 22 kms away from the City of Salta, through the route 9. An 18 metre high image of a Christ protects the village and its church. This day we will go through an incredible cloud forest, a splendid scenario for bird watching. Today we will appreciate completely different landscapes, from the green jungle to the multicoloured mountain of The Quebrada de Humahuaca in Jujuy province. In 2003 it was declared a UNESCO heritage site. There are a lot of small towns along The Quebrada de Humahuaca: Maimara, Purmamarca, Tilcara, Uquía and finally Humahuaca. Uquia shows in it church old paitings from Cuzco, Perú. Purmamarca, is a small town known by its Seven Colour Mountain. We will spend the night in Tilcara, 2.450 metres above sea level (8.038 feet). There is an archaeological site in Tilcara, The Pucará. We will visit the square, the church and the artisan market. Dinner in the hotel. Night in Tilcara.

Condor, the king of the sky

Our day will start descending towards Huyaira Huasi, the wind house, a small village where we we will stock with water to start the first climb of the day. Along this journey, we will have incredible panoramic views of the landscapes and if we are lucky, we will have the possibility of possible sighting of condors and eagles. We will reach 3.500 metres above sea level (11.482 feet). Later we will descend to our camp at Molulo. Hiking time: 7 hours.

The colours of the Andes

We leave Molulo and hike by the edges of the mountain, descending gradually until the beginning of the Peña Colorada where we will have the only big climb of the day. Then we will descend to the picturesque town of San Lucas. We will reach 1.800 metres above sea level (5.905 feet). Hiking time: 7 hours.
